Equipment Design Engineer

Location in Grand Rapids, Michigan

The role of the Equipment Design Engineer is to design equipment that will be fabricated in viastore’s manufacturing facility.  These designs need to be completed in concert with the overall project schedule.

Essential Job Functions

  • Creation of equipment design drawings in 3D using Inventor.
  • Creation of fabrication drawings to be delivered to Manufacturing using AutoCAD.  
  • Direct knowledge of the as sold budget for the equipment to be built. 
  • Work with Purchasing to obtain best value components required as integral parts of the equipment design. 
  • Adherence to the project schedule milestone dates for submitting designs to Manufacturing. 
  • Participate in equipment design review meetings with Design Engineering Manager and other project team members or key stake holders. 
  • Perform all engineering calculations, not limited to:  HP calculations; pneumatic requirements; material size/thickness selection; deflection calculations; cycle rate calculations; etc.
  • Consider and include all required mechanical and electrical functionality in each equipment design.  Work with system project team members to identify all equipment design requirements
  • Strive to create the most cost effective equipment while ensuring full design integrity requirements. 
  • Occasional travel to jobsites is required for multiple functions such as assisting the project team, reviewing design concerns, etc. 
  • Participate in project post mortem meetings.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of experience and training. 
  • Solid understanding of design engineering principles. 
  • Basic understanding of material handling systems including AS/RS, conveyor, controls, and software and their application to warehousing, distribution, and manufacturing. 
  • Proficient in the use of Inventor and AutoCAD is required. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment. 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • SAP Experience.
  • Bi-lingual (German)

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft office suite.
  • Proficiency is MS Project is essential.
  • Solid understanding of design engineering principles  
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate staff members.
  • Demonstrated ability to create world class designs that are highly cost competitive.  
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work in a team environment. 
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management.
