Senior Software Engineer

The Senior Software Engineer has major responsibility for the success of the software aspects of Material Handling projects, both from a technical and organizational perspective, with the ultimately goal to keep our customers happy. 

They fully understand the architecture and technical structure of a multi-tiered supply chain software application as well as the complex integration with material handling equipment and systems.  

This role is responsible to manage all technical aspects of a software project including requirement research, functional design, technical design, project development, product development, testing, release planning, deployment, support, and maintenance. Thoroughness and ensuring that all work meets our quality standards and the needs of our customers is key.

The senior software engineer will have the ability to manage all technical communication and interaction with a client as it pertains to our software offerings. Additionally, the position will be responsible to manage a staff of software engineers assigned to their project(s).

Essential Job Functions

  • Design, develop, and unit test software based on detailed requirements specifications
  • Author requirements specifications
  • Application technical configuration
  • Design and execute integrated system tests
  • Perform the role of Technical Project Lead
  • Hardware and 3rd party software configuration and set-up
  • Preparation of technical and operational documentation
  • On-site commissioning and start-up support
  • Systems and software support and maintenance
  • Effective team work, interacting with a multi-discipline team
  • Effective written and verbal communication with people with different technical fluencies (eg software engineers, other engineers, management, end users)
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
  • Solve practical problems and deal with situations where only limited standardization or documentation exists
  • Mentor/train other team members

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science or equivalent engineering degree from a four-year college or university  
  • Material handling or supply chain experience
  • Project based work experience
  • Systems integration experience
  • C++ programming
  • Server environments and production systems
  • Database design, troubleshooting, and administration (DBA for MSSQL or Oracle)
  • Network design, troubleshooting, and administration
  • Webserver configuration, troubleshooting, and administration (IIS and Apache)
  • Windows and Linux command line environment idioms and tools
  • SVN and GIT version control
  • Server operating system configuration, troubleshooting, and administration (Windows and RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu)
  • Virtual machine configuration, troubleshooting, and administration (VMware)
  • Continuous Integration and Deployment, including automated testing (NUnit, Jenkins, Docker, GitLab)
  • Experience with cloud computing (Azure or AWS)
  • Knowledge of server provisioning and associated computing hardware
  • Asynchronous programming
  • Non-relational database or datastore experience (eg Kafka, MongoDB)
  • 3D, simulation, or game engine programming (Demo3d and Unity3d)
  • Experience with PLC or control level logic (Allen Bradley and Siemens)
  • Breaking down customer requirements to detailed requirements
  • Technical design of application, interfaces, and systems
  • Software development and unit testing based on detailed requirements specifications, version control
  • Application and technical configuration
  • Complex test case development and test execution
  • Design and integration to material handling equipment, host systems, and other systems
  • On-site commissioning, start-up support, and super-user technical training
  • Preparation and maintenance of technical and operational documentation
  • Productive system maintenance, supporting hotline and aftermarket activities
  • Manage technical timeline activities and progress tracking / forecasting
  • Technical management and expectation management with customer organizations
  • Technology selection and prototyping
  • Hardware and 3rd party software research, design, configuration and set-up
  • Ability to comprehend and write technical documents such as requirements specifications, technical specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quotes, etc.
  • Experience with a programming language at an expert level, experience as technical project lead
  • DB experience
  • 5+ years’ software development and implementation experience
