Design Engineering Manager

Summary                              

The role of the Design Engineering Manager is to design and supervise the design of equipment that will be fabricated in viastore’s manufacturing facility.  The designed equipment will be both special designs and standard product designs. These designs need to be completed in concert with the overall project schedule.

  • Direct supervision of the CAD Design Engineering Department member(s), including short and long term contract engineers. This includes delegation of tasks, setting timetable for completion, managing hours and budgets, and handling disciplinary actions.
  • Accomplish staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees and contract employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards. Assist in the development of department training and business plans.
  • Create and supervise the creation of component design drawings in 3D using Inventor.
  • Create and supervise the creation of fabrication drawings to be delivered to Manufacturing using AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of the “as sold budget” for the components to be built. 
  • Work with the purchasing team to obtain best value components required as integral parts of the equipment design. 
  • Serve as subject matter expert for design engineering function, to include development and propagation of viastore design guides and standards. Develop standard products that are world class and cost competitive.
  • Adherence to the project schedule milestone dates for submitting designs to Manufacturing. 
  • Actively participate in equipment design review meetings with CAD Design Engineers and other project team members or key stake holders. 
  • Consider and include all required mechanical and electrical functionality in each equipment design.  Work with system project team members to identify all equipment design requirements.
  • Strive to create the most cost effective equipment while ensuring full design integrity requirements. 
  • Occasional travel to jobsites is required for multiple functions such as assisting the project team, reviewing design concerns, etc. 
  • Participate in project post mortem meetings and other project related meetings.
  • Assist Sales in pricing efforts when applicable.
  • Assist the Project Manager to set up a new project in SAP.  This effort will ensure proper budget tracking for fabricated components over the course of the project.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position is responsible for the direct supervision of the design engineering team, and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the company.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. During travel to customer locations, the employee may be exposed to various environments.

Travel Requirements:          

Ability to travel 5% to 20% per year.  Travel will constitute going to job sites to address challenges with equipment or to gather information.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a four-year college or university and 8 or more years of directly related industry experience
  • Solid understanding of material handling systems including AS/RS, conveyor, controls, and software and their application to warehousing, distribution, and manufacturing
  • Proficient in the use of Inventor is required
  • Strong skills using AutoCAD is required

Preferred Education and Experience

  • SAP Experience
  • Bi-lingual (German)
